Inner City Beekeeping Project - 20 Hives Added!

Yesterday June 11th 2021 was an exciting day for us- Robert Emmet CDP added 20 hives of native Irish honeybees to our ‘Inner City Beekeeping Project’ across several Dublin 8 locations.

Our Inner City Beekeeping Project was established in 2016 to enhance Dublin 8’s natural environment, create employment and education opportunities for the local community and to understand larger environmental patterns through technological innovation.

The project currently provides employment to two people and delivers an annual ten week ‘Beekeeping for Beginners’ course to local community members and hive hosts which will be free from this year.

We are also delighted to be working with The Digital Hub, Dublin, Smart D8, and Tyndall Laboratories to create tiny innovative sensors which will allow our bee population to monitor air quality, pollination pathways, pathogens and other important environmental metrics across Dublin 8!

We are especially thankful to Caroline Viguier from the Digital Hub and Smart D8 who are our main programme sponsors and without whom the projects continued growth would not be possible and also to Franciscans Ireland Adam and Eve church who have also supported us from the beginning.

More information on the project as well as live data on the bees (!) will be available on a new website- www.bee8.ie- (currently under construction by the talented and kind Orla Veale of Smart D8) later in the summer!
